With the changes in government regulations and standards in the insurance industry over the past several years, billing and coding has evolved into a specialized field. Today, Billing & Coding Specialists are critical components of the healthcare system as they are responsible for itemizing patients’ routine and major procedures using industry language (coding). These formulated claims are submitted to patients or insurance providers in order to create a seamless process for compensation. NWSC’s 17-week program will prepare students to identify and apply the correct codes for commercial insurance claims, including inpatient and outpatient coding, as well as familiarize students with electronic recorder technology.
Graduates are trained to work as Billing and Coding Specialists for various medical facilities.
Upon completion of the program, the student should be able to:
- Qualify for the occupational titles of Certified Billing & Coding Specialist, Inpatient or Outpatient Coder, or Ambulatory Coder.
- Use the correct medical terms in seeking correct codes for diseases or medical procedures.
- Correctly apply the principles in identifying codes that are systematically classified in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9-CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and in Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).
- Possess a thorough understanding of healthcare insurance (group insurance, personal insurance, and pre-paid health plans).
